First Time Renting a Car Without a Driver? 10 Tips for Beginners

Renting a car without a driver for the first time can feel like a big step. Whose rules apply? What if something goes wrong? What should you check before you drive off?

We hand over cars to first-timers every week, and the same few things make the difference between a stressful trip and a great one. Here are our 10 practical tips, in the order you'll need them.

This isn't the time to try something huge. If you mostly drive a small car at home, a hatchback like the Hyundai i20 or Maruti Baleno will feel familiar.

Not confident with a manual gearbox in traffic or on slopes? Ask for an automatic. In our fleet, the Honda Amaze, Honda City, Hyundai Venue and Hyundai Creta are all automatic, which makes city traffic and hill climbs much easier.

You need:

• A valid driving licence. A new licence is fine, as there is no minimum holding period, but learner's licences are not accepted.
• ID proof such as Aadhaar, passport or voter ID.

Before you book, be clear on four things:

• Daily rent. It starts at ₹1,200 for the Maruti Alto K10.
• Kilometres. 200 km per day is included. Extra kilometres cost ₹10–15/km, depending on the car.
• Fuel. Same-to-same: return the car with the fuel level it had at pickup.
• Deposit. ₹5,000 for most cars, refunded instantly when you return the car.

When you get the car, walk around it with our team. Point out any scratch or dent and take photos or a short video on your phone. Check the tyres, lights and wipers, and note the fuel level. It takes five minutes and keeps everything clear when you return the car.

Sit in the driver's seat and take a minute:

• Set the seat, steering and all three mirrors.
• Find the lights, wipers, hazard lights and horn.
• Check whether the car takes petrol or diesel. Putting in the wrong fuel is the most common first-timer mistake, and an expensive one.

Look up your route and the rough driving time before you leave. If you're heading out of the Tricity, tell us first and share where you're going. All our cars have all-India tourist permits, so you can drive to Punjab, Himachal or anywhere else in the country.

Many first trips from Chandigarh go straight into the hills. A few basics help a lot:

• Use a lower gear when going downhill, instead of riding the brakes.
• Honk before blind bends.
• Vehicles going uphill have the right of way on narrow stretches.
• Don't overtake on bends, and avoid driving in the hills after dark if you can.

Light off-road driving on unpaved roads is fine, but river crossings and extreme trails are not allowed.

Fuel, tolls and parking on your route are paid by you as you go. Keep some cash or UPI handy, and fill up before you head into the hills, where fuel stations are fewer.

• Fill up to the same fuel level you started with. If it's lower, you pay for the missing fuel plus a ₹200 refuelling charge.
• Need more time? Tell us at least 2 hours before your return time and we'll extend the booking.
• After a quick inspection, your deposit is refunded instantly.

Is it safe to rent a car if I'm a new driver?

Yes, as long as you have a valid licence and drive within your comfort zone. Start with a small car, ideally an automatic, and avoid long hill drives on your first trip.
