Who Can Rent a Self Drive Car in Chandigarh? Age, License & Rules

Thinking about renting a self drive car in Chandigarh but not sure whether you are eligible? The good news is that renting a self drive car is simple when you meet the basic age, driving licence and document requirements.

Whether you are a college student, a young professional, a family traveller or someone visiting Chandigarh for a few days, you can rent a car based on your needs. Here is what you should know before booking a self drive car with ODAC24.

What Is a Self Drive Car Rental?

A self drive rental means you book a car and drive it yourself instead of hiring a car with a driver. You get the freedom to decide where to go, when to stop and how long you want to stay.

For example, you can use a self drive car for Chandigarh sightseeing, a weekend trip to Kasauli, a drive to Shimla or an outstation journey with your family.

Who Can Rent a Self Drive Car in Chandigarh?

Generally, you need to meet three basic conditions:

• You should meet the minimum age requirement set by the rental company. At ODAC24, the minimum age is 21 (23 for the Mahindra Thar and Toyota Fortuner Legender).
• You must have a valid driving licence (Parivahan Sewa Portal (MoRTH)) for the type of car you are renting.
• You need to provide the required identity and address documents.

Rental companies can have their own eligibility rules, so it is always better to check the requirements before making a booking.

At ODAC24, the exact eligibility and document requirements can depend on the vehicle and booking.

What Is the Minimum Age to Rent a Self Drive Car?

Age requirements can vary between rental providers and vehicle categories. Many rental companies require customers to be at least 21 years old, while some may have additional conditions for certain cars.

If you are a young driver, check the age requirement before selecting your car. Premium and high-powered vehicles may have stricter rental conditions.

The important point is that having a driving licence alone does not automatically mean every rental car is available to you.

Which Driving Licence Is Required?

You need a valid driving licence that allows you to drive a private motor vehicle in India.

Before collecting the car, make sure:

• Your licence is valid.
• Your name matches your booking documents.
• The licence is readable and not damaged.
• You are legally permitted to drive the vehicle category you have booked.

An expired licence or a licence that does not meet the rental company’s requirements can cause problems at the time of pickup.

Documents Required to Rent a Self Drive Car

Keep your documents ready before booking. Usually, customers may be asked for:

1. Valid Driving Licence – Your current driving licence is the most important document.
2. Government ID Proof – Aadhaar, passport or another accepted government-issued ID may be required.
3. Address Proof – Depending on the rental company’s policy, additional address proof may be requested.
4. Booking Details – Keep your booking confirmation and contact details available.
5. Additional Documents for Outstation Trips – Some bookings may require extra verification depending on the vehicle, destination or rental policy.

It is better to confirm the exact document list with the rental provider before pickup.

What Rules Should You Follow While Driving a Rental Car?

The same MoRTH Road Safety Guidelines that apply to your own car also apply when driving a rental car.

Always carry your driving licence and required vehicle documents, follow speed limits, wear your seat belt and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

You should also check the car before starting your trip. Look at the tyres, fuel level, lights, brakes and visible damage. If you notice an issue, inform the rental company before leaving.

For outstation travel, also confirm whether your booking includes the required permit and whether there are any destination-specific restrictions.

Which Car Is Perfect for Gen Z?

Gen Z drivers often want a car that is easy to handle, practical for city driving and suitable for short trips with friends.

A compact hatchback such as a Maruti Alto K10, Maruti Celerio or Maruti Baleno can be a practical choice for Chandigarh city rides. These cars are easier to park and work well for college outings, shopping and weekend plans.

If you are travelling with a group of friends, a compact SUV such as a Maruti Brezza or Hyundai Creta can offer more space.

Which Car Is Perfect for Millennials?

Millennials may have different needs depending on whether they are travelling with family, working remotely or planning a longer road trip.

A Honda City, Hyundai Creta or Mahindra Scorpio Classic can be a good choice when comfort and space are important. For family road trips, a Toyota Innova Crysta or Toyota Fortuner can be considered when the budget and group size allow.

For a special occasion or a premium trip, luxury and premium SUV options can make the journey more comfortable.

The best car is not always the biggest or most expensive one. Choose according to the number of passengers, luggage, route and budget.

Why Check Everything Before Booking?

Before confirming a self drive car, check the rental price, security deposit, kilometres included, fuel policy, pickup and return process, outstation rules and what happens in case of a breakdown. here is our vehicle situation.

At ODAC24, customers can choose from different vehicle categories based on their travel plans. Checking the rental conditions before pickup can help avoid confusion later.
